Building in the Highlands – a huge challenge

We were all very enthusiastic when we started to transport the first materials for the construction of the new school in Tauripampa. Tauripampa is a very poor village located on the Cordillera Negra in the Peruvian Andes. We were promised help with the transportation from the local government as they provided us access to a truck to be used to carry the materials needed for the construction. But that was before the rain started and in addition the road included a very narrow and old bridge that the borrowed truck could not cross….and as the local government did not have any other truck that could be used, Xcode needed to find and lend another, smaller truck that could be used for the transport.

This process took a lot of time and effort and also postponed the start date of the construction. With the smaller truck, we also needed to make around 8 journeys per day, instead of the 2 per day that we have planned at the beginning with the truck from the government in Carhuaz.

But the large truck problem was not going to be the only problem waiting for us…in the Andes the winter season follows the Norwegian winter and with winter in the Andes the rain is increasing in intensity. After we got the new, smaller truck the rain actually made it impossible to transport materials to Tauripampa as the truck got stuck in the muddy road.

We therefore needed to use the ‘weather windows’ we got to make the necessary transportation. Finally though the construction process could be started, a little bit behind the schedule and with a lot more invested in transportation than we first hoped for.

The enthusiasm of the people and the joy of children that will have a better place in which to study, make us to realize that it is worth all the effort that Xcode and its customers are putting into this project. We are now in the phase of finalizing all walls and the basic construction and with this the final phase with finishing work on the construction itself can start. After that there will only be smaller details missing, like painting, electrical installations, doors and windows etc.

The new school year will start on March 1st, and we hope by that time that the construction is finished. As the cost has been higher than expected for the construction so far, we will Ahab to see if the budget also will cover furnishing the school with necessary desks, chairs and other school material.

New School in Tauripampa

The work continued in the school, we were having a very hard time in the construction making a big effort to finish the classrooms for the children. Almost 60% of the building finished, due to this advance we could coordinate actions with the carpenter to begin the work on the school roof.

The second week of February we arrived in Tauripampa to start the roofing of the classroom, for Tuesday of the next week, all the pieces were placed. The work of the carpenters consisted in the roofing of two classrooms, with Andean tiles for the proper protection of the children. Meanwhile the other parts of the classes were being finished by the constructor to deliver the school on schedule.

On Wednesday 24th, we had scheduled the visit of UGEL - CARHUAZ to the school, we visited the new classrooms, the Director of UGEL - CARHUAZ conducted the inspection and it should be remarked that school officials were very pleased with the work done in the school.

Finally on Saturday, February 27th we held the grand opening of the new school in Tauripampa. At 12 we began the opening ceremony with the presence of Mr. Bjørnar Arnesen as representative of Xcode, Mr. Edgar Mejia UGEL - CARHUAZ Director, Professor Mario Depaz, director of the Tauripampa school, and the Regional Counselor of Carhuaz.

We started the ceremony with speeches by the different authorities and with special importance Mr. Bjørnar Arnesen could give a few words on behalf of Xcode Foundation and our corporate partners in this important project. We took this opportunity to clear out some misunderstandings that occurred with the villagers during the construction of the school that generated some tension between the work teams and the residents of Tauripampa. Finally we left a close relationship with the population who expressed a deep gratitude for having a new school to be used by future generations of children in the village.

In addition to the ceremony we gave the school working materials to implement the newly opened classrooms: 2 acrylic boards, markers, erasers, crayons, flashcards, toys, between other school materials.

We hope that children can take advantage of this great donation and progress with their town through a better quality education.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this great work reality and all companies who funded this worthy project.

Thank you for everything!

Building a school in Tauripampa

First of all; a big THANK YOU to everybody that contributes to the school project in Tauripampa. Financing of the project is now secured and the first phase on the way. Thank you to all for helping in your own way to make this possible.

In the beginning of December we started the project by going to the village of Tauripampa. We took a night bus from Lima and arrived in Huaraz at 07.30 in morning. After a quick breakfast, we went by bus to Carhuaz, 40 minutes from Huaraz. There, we met representatives from the School Council in Carhuaz, the head teacher at the school in Tauripampa and our driver into the mountains. After approximately a 20 minute drive into the mountains, we came to the village Auquipampa, our first stop. This village was part of the assessment for the school project, but we considered Tauripampa to be in a greater need. As they were not to get a new school this time, we instead handed out Christmas presents to the children in preschool age something that was very well received.

We had to continue our trip to Tuaripampa and after one hour on the road we arrived in the village, which is beautifully situated on a plateau and possesses a spectacular view to 'everywhere', the car was soon surrounded by children who have been waiting our arrival. We soon started with the distribution of school materials and Christmas gifts for the children.

After that we meet with the authorities and everyone involved in the project. The principal started with the welcome speech and a review of the project’s schedule. Then there was the speech from the representative of the School Council, a walk-through of the project from Xcode with explanation of the plan, who the contributors are and the whole construction process coming. There were some questions from the audience, mainly related to the schedule and the actual construction process.

When all clarifications were done, we signed the agreement where Xcode guarantees that the new school buildings will be constructed. This is necessary for the village to start the demolition of two buildings (or the remains of the two buildings) and preparation for actual construction.

Here a quick review of the schedule to come, again thank you to everyone for your help and we will be bringing more news about the project soon.
    January:
  • Formalities will be sorted out with the authorities.
  • Sign contract with the construction company.
  • Start demolition, bringing down the existing building.
  • Mid January we will transport most of the material needed for the construction (except for the roof).
  • Start construction as soon as possible.
    February:
  • Leave school ready for the finishing work.
  • Finish school. Ready for the new school season in March 2010.
